Job Enrichment - Continuing Advancement

This program was designed to reward classified staff for continuing growth and development through course work. It is purposely flexible to allow for the wide diversity, interests, and knowledge levels of staff members within the Department of Housing, Dining, and Guest Services.

Advanced Job Enrichment allows those individuals who have completed the first three levels of Job Enrichment through Housing, Dining and Guest Services to continue with their learning process. The Advanced Job Enrichment Program is a continuing education program. There is one bonus, and a 1% increase in pay each year you complete the program. A Job Enrichment Bonus is earned in the first day of the pay week following the certification of completion of program requirements. This includes any time requirements.

There is no limit to the number of classified staff members who can complete this program. Participation in this program will be discontinued if the staff member leaves the Department of Housing, Dining, and Guest Services, changes to a job classification outside of those eligible for this program, or work performance becomes unsatisfactory.

A staff member cannot participate in any other job enrichment programs offered at the university while working in the Department of Housing, Dining & Guest Services. Job Enrichment credit may be applied to other programs if you leave the department and go to work in another department on campus covered by a separate job enrichment program. Prior work would be reviewed by the manager of staff development in your new work area.

Eligibility Requirements
To be considered for the Job Enrichment Program, Continuing Advancement, current staff members must apply and meet the following criteria:
  • Must have completed the previous Job Enrichment Program Phase. There is no waiting period to begin this program. You can begin taking courses immediately after completing the previous Phase, however you will not receive the bonus and promotion in place until a year has passed since your previous Phase increase. You may complete the Continuing Advancement Phase one time per year with no waiting period.
  • Must have a satisfactory job performance, with ratings no lower than satisfactory or meeting standards of performance on the last two performance reports. They must have no written disciplinary action for the previous twelve (12) months, or suspensions for the previous twenty-four (24) months. Once a staff member is accepted into the program, if work performance falls below satisfactory level, it may be determined that they should not continue in the program until performance improves for twelve (12) months.

In order to obtain the yearly bonus and promotion in place, staff members must complete courses from the guidelines listed below. You may choose one of the following options.

Miami University Courses (or other institutes of higher education) - One Academic Course
  • Any academic course (3 or more credit hours/16 week course)
  • Would not include courses such as Golf, Tennis or Basket Weaving
  • Courses need to be pre-approved by the Senior Administrator for Staff Development
  • These courses are paid for by the staff member, and they are reimbursed (up to $200, not including books, lab fees or transportation) after they successfully complete the course with a grade of 75% or better
  • Classes may also be taken at other institutions, such as Butler Tech. In this case, a combination of courses would be needed to equal the 16 weeks of course work. These courses also need to be pre-approved by the Senior Administrator for Staff Development

Educational Institute - One Course
  • These courses include a home-study text book and study materials. The course is equivalent to a 3-hour college level course. You read the book and take quizzes on your own. When you are ready, you schedule a test time with the Office of Staff Development. It's generally an 80-100 question, multiple-choice test. You are not allowed to use your books or notes on this test
  • The tests are then sent to the Educational Institute for grading
  • If you pass the test (with a 75% or better), you receive the bonus
  • If you do not pass the test the first time, you can always retake the test (there is no fee!)
  • Tests do not leave the Burkhouse Center. If you do not pass the test, you are more than welcome to review your test at the Burkhouse Center, and then set up an appointment to retake the test
  • There are multiple versions of the test for each course. You will not receive the same test when you take the test a second time

TPC Training Systems: Offers over 130 technical courses for those staff members who are looking to learn more about maintenance basics. These courses include a manual with all of the lessons (including self-tests and practice tests). Once you have completed the manual, contact us to schedule a test. The test is multiple-choice (50-100 questions) and is NOT an open-book exam. If you do not pass the test the first time, you will have another chance to take the test.

Other courses may be substituted in each section with prior approval from the Senior Administrator For Staff Development. The Office of Continuing Education at Miami University, Butler Tech, and the Hamilton Job Development Center offer many courses throughout the year. You would register for the class, pay for it in advance, and be reimbursed (up to $200) upon successfully completing the course with a 70% or above score. Original receipts are required for reimbursements (cancelled check, credit card statements, etc copies will not be accepted). The class should be equivalent to a 10-week course (at least 10-12 hours).

ServSafe Food Safety Certification - Counts as one AMA Course or One university credit hour

For those people in food service areas, when you successfully complete the ServSafe course, you may count it in your job enrichment program. Make sure to contact the Office of Staff Development after you receive your certificate to receive credit.

This would take the place of one American Management Association course, so you would still have to complete three other AMA courses to receive your bonus.

ServSafe would also count as one university credit hour. So if you find a 2 credit hour course that you want to take, that combined with ServSafe would give you enough credit for a bonus and 1% increase.

SkillPort courses available through MyMiami
  • Choose 20 hours of Skill Port courses (each course has an "estimated duration" time listed on the first page of the course). Choose business or computer courses. If you aren't sure if the course you'd like to take will count, contact us.

To achieve a course status of "completed" in SkillPort you must view every page in the lessons as well as achieve an overall course test score of 70% or higher. Only courses flagged as completed in SkillPort will be evaluated for job enrichment credit.

Completed SkillPort and VTC learning modules submitted for job enrichment credit will be evaluated based upon the vendor's estimated duration. A minimum duration of 35% of the vendor's estimated duration is required (i.e. a 3-hour module requires a minimum participation of 63 minutes).

Job enrichment credit will be awarded for no more than 15 SkillPort or VTC courses in a 12-month period. This allows you the flexibility of your choice of courses, while still giving you the ability to take 20 hours of courses needed for the Continuing Advancement Phase of the Job Enrichment Program, if that is how you choose to complete that program.

  • Please contact us when you have completed the courses so your progress can be verified on-line. If you do not choose to take the courses on line (and download them to your home computer) you will need to print out your test results for each course taken and send that to the Office of Staff Development.

The Bonus/Raise Process

A Job Enrichment Bonus is earned in the first day of the pay week following the certification of completion of program requirements. This includes any time requirements.

Depending on where we are in the payroll period, your bonus and/or raise will take anywhere from two to four weeks to appear on your check. So please be patient, and do not count on your bonus/raise until you receive a confirmation letter from the Office of Human Resources which will tell you exactly when you will receive the bonus/raise.

You can immediately start the next Job Enrichment Phase after completing this one.
