Job Enrichment - Phase I

This Job Enrichment Program was developed to encourage the growth and development of all classified staff members.

Employees of the Department of Housing, Dining & Guest Services may not participate in any other job enrichment programs while working for the department. Job Enrichment credit may be applied to other programs if you leave the department and go to work in another department on campus covered by a separate job enrichment program. This would be reviewed by the manager of staff development in your new work area. This program may be completed one time only. For example: If a Building & Grounds Assistant completed the program, then became a Maintenance Repair Technician they could not go through Phase I of the program again.

University, independent or home study courses may be added to, changed, or deleted from those listed as changes are made by institutions and/or companies.

Staff members earn bonus payments throughout the program for successful completion of courses and required elements. A Job Enrichment Bonus is earned in the first day of the pay week following the certification of completion of program requirements. This includes any time requirements. Upon completing the entire program, the staff member will receive a 4% increase in their hourly rate of pay. No change in pay grade or classification will occur upon completion of the program. There is no set time period in which a staff member must complete the program.

Participation in the Job Enrichment Program requires employees to be honest about their efforts and accomplishments. Dishonesty is any activity that tends to compromise the integrity of or subvert the educational process of the Job Enrichment Program. Any act of dishonesty is grounds for disciplinary action, up to and including termination. This includes, but is not limited to, furnishing false information or omitting relevant or necessary information in order to gain a benefit.

Any submission of information for bonuses or raises in the Job Enrichment Program is a representation that the employee has completed all the course/program requirements.

Employees are encouraged to take the job enrichment program as it is intended, complete the work honestly and appropriately, learn from it, and reap the rewards.

Eligibility Requirements for the Job Enrichment Program
To be considered for the Job Enrichment Program, Phase I, current staff members must apply and meet the following criteria:
  • Have satisfactorily completed working twelve (12) months, full or part-time at Miami University from last date of hire. Student employment does not count towards this time.
  • Have a satisfactory work record (subject to supervisor's approval), including performance reports, with no written disciplinary action for the previous twelve (12) months, or suspension for the previous twenty-four (24) months. Once a staff member is accepted into the program, if on-the-job performance becomes unsatisfactory, it may be determined that they should not continue in the job enrichment program until their performance improves.
  • A staff member will need to have a GED or high school diploma in order to complete the program and register for some courses. (But you may still take home-study courses, attend seminars and other classes and earn the bonuses even if you do not have your GED or high school diploma). If you are interested in obtaining your high school diploma or GED please contact us. There are quite a few facilities in the area that are ready and willing to help you obtain this goal, including a home-study program

Required Elements
After a staff member has been notified of their acceptance into the Job Enrichment Program, satisfactorily completing all six of the elements below will complete the Job Enrichment Program.

Many of the elements below offer "home-study" options, either through the American Management Association, The TPC System, or the Educational Institute. If you choose one of these courses, call the Office of Staff Development to order it. There is no cost to you for these courses. The books will be ordered and sent to your work location when they arrive.

You can contact us with your name and course selections to order courses:

American Management Association: Most of these courses have a "Pre-Test" and a "Post-Test". You MUST complete the pre-test and send the computer test sheet back to AMA in the pre-addressed envelope. Once you receive your pre-test score you can send in your post-test computer sheet. It usually takes a few weeks to process the grades and send them back to you. Once you receive your final post-test grade, send that to the Office of Staff Development (addressed to Michelle Simmerman at Cook Place. Please do NOT send mail to the GF Burkhouse Center as there is not a direct mail drop to the location and it will get lost, which will delay your bonus or raise!). You will also receive a certificate for the courses you take through AMA. Send those to the Office of Staff Development as well. The Office of Staff Development receives nothing directly from the American Management Association concerning your grades, so be sure to send them to us as soon as you receive them to enable us to process your bonuses and raises in a timely manner.

Educational Institute: These courses only have a final exam, which is a 100-point, multiple-choice test. This test is taken at the Office of Staff Development (contact us to set up an exam time). It usually takes approximately one hour to complete these tests (you cannot use notes or the book during this test). The test is then sent to the Educational Institute for grading. The results are mailed to the Office of Staff Development, and you will be notified of your grade and get a completion certificate. If you do not pass the test on the first try, you can always take it again!

TPC Training Systems: Offers over 130 technical courses for those staff members who are looking to learn more about maintenance basics. These courses include a manual with all of the lessons (including self-tests and practice tests). Once you have completed the manual, contact us to schedule a test. The test is multiple-choice (50-100 questions) and is NOT an open-book exam. If you do not pass the test the first time, you will have another chance to take the test.

Other courses may be substituted with prior approval from the Senior Administrator For Staff Development. The Office of Continuing Education at Miami University, Butler Tech, and the Hamilton Job Development Center offer many courses throughout the year. You would register for the class, pay for it in advance, and be reimbursed (up to $200) upon successfully completing the course with a 70% or above score. Original receipts are required for reimbursements (cancelled check, credit card statements, etc copies will not be accepted). The class should be equivalent to a 10-week course (at least 10-12 hours).

1. Computer Training (previously "Advanced Training")

As long as you are on-line at home, through any internet provider (Miami University, AOL, Road Runner, etc) you can take advantage of the Skill Port courses offered on-line to all Miami University faculty, staff & students. Computer Courses available through Skill Port: Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, Access, Power Point and many others.

Most of the Microsoft Office courses have 3 levels, Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced. To get credit for Job Enrichment, you must take and pass three computer courses. You may also choose to take 3 beginning level courses, or three advanced level courses. You can take any combination of three courses that you choose.

To achieve a course status of “completed” in SkillPort & VTC courses you must view every page in the lessons as well as achieve an overall course test score of 70% or higher. Only courses flagged as completed in SkillPort will be evaluated for job enrichment credit.

Completed SkillPort and VTC learning modules submitted for job enrichment credit will be evaluated based upon the vendor’s estimated duration. A minimum duration of 35% of the vendor’s estimated duration is required (i.e. a 3-hour module requires a minimum participation of 63 minutes).

Job enrichment credit will be awarded for no more than 15 SkillPort or VTC courses in a 12-month period.

Many other courses are also available through Skill Port, contact us if you have an interest in anything beyond Microsoft Office.
